The Future of the Cohesion Policy
The Spanish Regional Science Association (AECR) has promoted the analysis and the critical reflection of the regional problems in Spain from different approaches throughout several decades. Among its various initiatives, we should highlight the Regional Studies Meeting (RER), whose thirty-sixth edition will be set up by the Extremadurian Regional Science Association (a territorial section of the AECR).
The 36th Regional Studies Meeting (Badajoz-Elvas, 2010) will be held in partnership with the Portuguese Association for Regional Development (APDR) and the Vicepresidencia Segunda y Consejería de Economía, Comercio e Innovación de la Junta de Extremadura. The topic of this International Meeting on Regional Science is “THE FUTURE OF THE COHESION POLICY”.
The meeting will begin with a workshop, whose topic is “Frontiers and Regional Development”, in Elvas (Portugal) on Wednesday, November 17. The meeting will continue in Badajoz (Spain) on Thursday 18 and Friday, November 19.
The meeting that will take place in Badajoz-Elvas in 2010 will be a technical forum opened to discussion of regional topics that are of concern to researchers and regional policy makers. The papers that will be presented can refer to very different scientific subjects: Economics, Geography, Sociology, Political Science, Demography, Urban and Regional Planning, Environment and Biodiversity, etc. In the meeting, participants will present different papers that will examine both methodological questions and empirical analysis of regional problems in order to contribute to policy design and evaluation.
The Scientific Committee was responsible for the selection of the contents of the meeting. The languages of the meeting will be Spanish, Portuguese and English.
Regional Policy in Europe is in a reflection process about policy proposals and the corresponding new regulations that will arrive after 2013. The subject of the 2010 Badajoz-Elvas International Meeting on Regional Science, “The Future of the Cohesion Policy”, is an invitation to present papers that boost this reflection with regard to regional development policies. In that context, because this is a cross-border meeting, the topic that will be analyzed in the Elvas Workshop (“Frontiers and Regional Development”) takes on a higher relevance.
The interest in having papers that address the above two subjects was taken into account in the meeting arrangement. For that reason, the participants are encouraged to contribute to the debate on these issues in order to shed some light on the future of the regional development policies in the European Union. Of course, meeting sessions are opened to a wider range of topics.
